Update: Luann de Lesseps announced that she and Tom D'Agostino plan to divorce on Twitter on August 3. "It's with great sadness that Tom & I agreed to divorce," she tweeted. "We care for each other very much, hope you respect our privacy during this sad time!"

Luann D'Agostino addressed recent reports of some public drama with her husband, Tom D'Agostino, while speaking with E! News at ACE's Third Annual Foodie Ball Tuesday. "What couple doesn't have lovers' quarrels? Tom and I are very passionate and very much in love with each other and things happen," Luann said. "Unfortunately we are very much public people and so everybody likes to talk about it. From the Housewives to the restaurant, it's very hard to keep privacy."

The Real Housewives of New York City pal went on to say that the incident "was made to be a much bigger deal." "People like to gossip, people like to talk," Luann said. "That can weigh heavily on a relationship. Tom and I have been through a lot, but we love each other. We aren't going to let gossip or rumors get the best of us."

That means that Luann is only following her heart when it comes to her future with Tom — and not listening to what anyone else has to say about her marriage. "You can never listen to your friends about these kinds of things, you know in your heart of hearts what you need to do for yourself," she said.

Ultimately, Luann told E! News that she and Tom are doing just fine these days. "Tom and I are good. We love each other and you work through things," she said. "That's what couples do — so everything is fine and we are happy."

Luann expressed a similar sentiment in a statement to The Daily Dish earlier this week. "Tom and I are in love and marriage takes work," she said. "We are working on this together."

Tom also commented on the reports in a statement to Us Weekly. "There is a lot of love here,” he said. “We want it to succeed.”

Now Luann and Tom are focused on getting their relationship back on track. “We’re going to Newport this weekend to take a trip just the two of us to be alone; No people, no kids — just the two of us,” she told PEOPLE at the ACE event. “Relationships are all about communication and spending time together, so I feel like there’s a needed weekend in order. We’re just going to go away and enjoy each other.”

But all of this drama does have its benefits. “A good healthy argument makes for good makeup sex,” Luann said. “And we are having a lot of makeup sex.”
