Luann de Lesseps Reflects on Some Iconic Season 1 Drama with Bethenny Frankel

Does the RHONY cast member have any regrets?

By Jocelyn Vena

RHONY fans know by now that Luann de Lesseps has always embraced her title of The Countess with open arms. And that was definitely evident back in Season 1 of The Real Housewives of New York City when she got perturbed with Bethenny Frankel for introducing her to a driver as Luann instead of another title: Mrs. de Lesseps (she and Count Alexandre de Lesseps were still married at the time).

When Luann appeared on the August 6 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, she reflected on that moment.

"Do I regret it? No. I just feel like it was, I didn't really know this person. I felt like I was kind of caught off guard. Do I regret it? Maybe. I don't know. It was so long ago," she said.

For more from Luann about some of her iconic Countess moments over the years on RHONY, press play on the clip above.

In the past, Luann has explained why, even after her divorce, she still goes by The Countess.

"I don't know what people think, but de Lesseps — Count de Lesseps — historically did the Suez Canal, and the Panama Canal, and gave the Statue of Liberty to this country for the French. So the Countess title that I have was not picked out of a Cracker Jack's box," she explained to The Daily Dish in 2019. "You know this is a real title and one that is a courtesy title because obviously French aristocracy doesn't exist anymore. But it's a title of courtesy for all the services rendered to the king and queen at the time. [But people think] that I just play around with this title. I was married for 17 years and that title will always be a part of who I am. That's my history."

In 2017, following her split from Tom D'Agostino, she added in a sit down with Andy Cohen: "Well I'm Luann de Lesseps and The Countess is always going to be a part of me. Now I have my bedding collection coming out. And it's a brand that I own. Like Queen Latifah, is she really queen? I mean, right? So it's part of me and I was a countess. So it's a brand that I own as Luann de Lesseps."
