The Real Housewives of Potomac's Mia Thornton confirmed in a statement on Sept. 29 that she and her husband, Gordon Thornton, have "separated" after over a decade of marriage.

Mia Thornton confirms she has "separated" from her husband, Gordon, and shares a marriage update

Mia shared the news about the state of her marriage in a statement on Sept. 29, adding that she is putting her family first as they "figure things out."

"Like all marriages, ours has had its ups and downs," Mia told PEOPLE in a statement on Friday. "At this time, Gordon and I are separated, but my family is my number one priority, and I am committed to doing whatever it takes to make sure we are okay." 

She added, "We ask that you respect our privacy and give us the time and space to figure things out."

The news comes after Mia marked Gordon's 71st birthday with an Instagram message earlier this month.

Mia and Gordon have been married since 2012. Mia and Gordon often share with fans their lives as parents raising their kids, Jeremiah, Juliana, and Juliana.

Over the last couple seasons, Mia and Gordon have allowed viewers into their life and their marriage. The news of the current state of their marriage comes ahead of a new season of RHOP and fans will get to learn more about the couple's marital struggles in the upcoming Season 8 of The Real Housewives of Potomac.

"After facing business issues with The Joint chiropractor, Mia and Gordon are not in a good place in their marriage. Mia has looked into getting a divorce attorney, but she's choosing to go to couples therapy first," a press release for the new season notes. "She's also trying to get back to a better place with Karen, but rumors get in the way."

Viewers can follow Mia and Gordon's journey when RHOP returns for Season 8 on Sunday, November 5 at 8/9c with a supersized premiere on Bravo.
