Below Deck's Shane Coopersmith on Getting Caught by Captain Lee: "I Was Pretty Freaked Out"
The deckhand reveals what he "learned very quickly" after that Season 8 experience.
Deckhand Shane Coopersmith learned an important lesson in the November 9 episode of Below Deck.
When the charter guests were off the yacht for the afternoon, Shane decided to take a dip in the water sans shirt and radio. But then bosun Eddie Lucas radioed the deck crew back on the yacht, and when no one answered, Captain Lee Rosbach checked in with Shane over the radio to see if he copied.
After receiving no response from Shane, Captain Lee decided to go find the deckhand himself. Captain Lee found Shane climbing out of the water and radioed him again. This time, Shane picked up, and Captain Lee told him that he always has to have a shirt on while he's working and should be wearing a rash guard when he's in the water. Eddie also told Shane to "always make sure you answer your radio," which the deckhand copied and said it "won't happen again."
When Shane appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on November 9, he explained how he ended up in the water in the first place. "It was a stressful couple days, so I finally had a moment of freedom where I thought I didn't have anything to do," he said in the above clip. "So there's no better way to clear my mind than hopping in the water."
Though Shane acknowledged that "clearly, it didn't go well," he said that he learned from his mistakes in that moment. "I learned very quickly that at that point from now on, my radio needs to be glued to my ear, basically," Shane shared. "I was pretty freaked out getting reprehended by Captain Lee and Eddie. But, you know, I learned, and I didn't let it happen again."
