Blueberries and Corn is the Southern Flavor Combo You Didn't Know You Needed

Created by Bravo for Lay's.

By Bryce Gruber

If 2016 taught us anything, it's that the possibilities for food mashups are endless. Why settle for one great dish or flavor when you can have two? That’s why we're teaming up with Lay’s Do Us a Flavor campaign to unearth some of the greatest flavor mashups you actually want to try. Throughout the next two weeks, you’ll have the chance to vote for the flavor combination you'd like to see two Top Chef cheftestants cook with in the first-ever LIVE Top Chef Quickfire challenge. First up: Blueberries and corn.

How to Watch

Watch Top Chef Season 21 Wednesdays at 9/8c on Bravo and next day on Peacock.

If you're thinking well, that's a new one, think again, because the blueberries and corn combo has been going strong in America's deep South for ages, thanks in part to the starchy sweetness in corn and the sweet, light acidity found in blueberries.

Corn is probably most famous as the perfect BBQ side dish (whether it's corn on the cob or cornbread or corn pudding), but hello, let us not forget the ever-important corn muffin. Have you ever thought of what would happen if you combined two of the most common muffin varieties, corn and blueberry? Magic like this, that's what.

Chefs, food bloggers and cookbook authors around the country have been catching onto this genius flavor mashup though, and creating everything from sweet corn and blueberry ice cream, to corn and blueberry creme brulee, to super healthy blueberry corn quinoa salads. Corn flavor combos are also having a moment in the spotlight in Asian cuisine, with corn actually rivaling rice's popularity in China now.

All of this makes us think we'll be seeing this flavor duo popping up all over the place in the coming months — especially in the summer. Expect to see this pairing jump from muffins, desserts and salads to more upscale, globally inspired creations on restaurant menus.

Vote for the flavor combination YOU want to see Top Chef cheftestants cook with in our first-ever live Top Chef Quickfire Challenge, streaming on Facebook and Bravotv.com on Thursday, March 2.

Vote now, vote often, and don't forget to tune in!

Have your own killer flavor idea? Submit your flavor at Lay's Do Us a Flavor and maybe it could be worth $1 million.
