Everyone’s favorite semi-aquatic mammal, Fiona the hippo, has had a lot to celebrate this past year. Despite being born six weeks premature last January, she has successfully achieved one miraculous milestone after the other under the watchful care of the Cincinnati Zoo. From her first step, to her first swim, to her first photobomb, Fiona has captured the hearts of hippo enthusiasts worldwide.
Although her actual birthday is January 24th, the zoo began celebrations this past weekend so more fans and friends could attend. They pulled out all the stops: A birthday banner at the front entrance, a green screen so fans could take pictures “with” Fiona, temporary tattoos in her likeness, and decorations everywhere.
But it’s not a birthday party without cake and ice cream! The birthday girl not only received a special fruit birthday cake created by the zoo’s nutritionist, but she also had her likeness created in brownies! But the piece de resistance? She was honored with her very own flavor of ice cream by Graeter’s — Chunky Chunky Hippo!
Even the other zoo animals got in on the fun. The meerkats celebrated with colorful balloons, Fifi the Arctic fox got in on the games, the red pandas brought gifts, and even the polar bears put on their party hats.
Happy, happy birthday Fiona! Here’s to many more!
