Kate Chastain Reveals if She'd Ever Return to Below Deck

The former chief stew says her Project Runway guest appearance had her reconsidering yacht life.

By Joshua Espinoza

Will Kate Chastain ever revive her yachting career? She might on one condition.

How to Watch

Watch Below Deck on Bravo Mondays at 9/8c and next day on Peacock. Catch up on the Bravo App.

The Below Deck alum referenced a possible return before her guest judge appearance on Project Runway: All-Stars Season 20. Episode 9 challenged the contestants to create new uniforms for various Below Deck yachties, including crew members from the original series as well as the Below Deck MediterraneanBelow Deck Down Under, and Below Deck Sailing Yacht.

Kate Chastain's Project Runway Appearance

Kate, who joined Below Deck in 2014’s Season 2, teased the crossover challenge during an interview with E! News last week, shortly before the episode aired.

“I have loved Project Runway forever,” she said. "20 years later and to be able to go there and meet Nina Garcia in person was a literal dream come true. Let’s face it, the yachting uniforms I think, personally, could use a revamp. Every year when I did Below Deck I would show them Ralph Lauren nautical-inspired ads and I was like, ‘What about something like this?’ and they’re like, ‘No, it’s going to be a polo shirt and a skort again.’”

Would Kate Chastain ever return to yachting?

Kate said she was very impressed by the winning look on Project Runwa, — so much so that she would consider returning to yacht life if the uniform was adopted.

“The winning look was so cool and stylish it was almost enough for me to be like, ‘If that’s the uniform I would so back,’” she told the outlet. “I’m just saying. That’s how stylish it was. Like, if I get to wear that, maybe.”

The challenge winner turned out to be Project Runway Season 17 alum Bishme Cromartie, who was partnered with Below Deck Down Under’s Aesha Scott. Bishme designed an all-neoprene look that consisted of a crisp, white quarter-zip shirt; a black cropped jacket; and a matching skirt. The ensemble featured a number of maritime elements, including stripe details and a large anchor graphic on the outerwear piece.

Captain Lee Rosbach's Project Runway Cameo

Captain Lee Rosbach also appeared on the Aug. 3 Project Runway episode as well as the Project Runway After Show with host Christian Siriano. The sit-down included a blast from the past, a quick review of the episode’s runway looks, as well as a few kind words about Kate.

“She’s fearless,” Captain Lee said about the former chief stew.

What Job Would Christian Siriano Have on Captain Lee's Yacht?

Christian also asked Captain Lee what role he would best be suited for on a yacht. The captain’s answer? The primary guest.

“I think that’s where you might fit in best,” he said. “The primary is the guy that sits there and says, ‘Of course, I’ll have another cocktail,’ and, ‘I think we’ll do a beach picnic tomorrow.’ They get whatever they want.”
