People Were Not Amused by Katy Perry’s “Wig Snatched” Moment
The singer's skit left some people confused.
The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards were filled with showstopping beauty and fashion moments including Amber Rose’s new 'do, Nicki Minaj’s blinged-out neck, and Asahd Khaled's custom Gucci suit. But, as with any award show, there were also many questionable moments including Katy Perry's "wig snatched" stand-up, which fans were not pleased with.
Soon after Pink left everyone feeling inspired with her powerful acceptance speech geared toward her daughter, Perry, the host for the evening, came back onstage and shared her own sentiments on Pink's speech. Pink's words were filled with encouragement, touching on body image issues, gender equality, and confidence, which apparently moved Perry so much it led to the host snatching off her long blonde wig. "I am dead, I am living, I am crying — she's iconic. Wig, snatched," Perry said in response to Pink's speech.
Here’s the awkward moment.
As Allure spotted, unamused fans quickly took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the moment. Many labeled Perry's "wig snatched" moment as a form of cultural appropriation, while others simply found the skit to be painfully un-funny.
However, some fans—like Perry's hairstylist Chris Appleton—found the skit to be endearing.
This isn't the first time Perry has been called out for cultural appropriation. Perry has been at the bud of several appropriation controversies, in fact. The singer recently spoke out on her cornrow controversy. “I will never understand some of those things because of who I am. But I can educate myself, and that’s what I’m trying to do along the way," she said in a recent live stream interview.
Perhaps this is one skit Perry also should've asked for feedback before executing!
