Angelina Jolie Says She Used This Highly Unorthodox Method to Dye Her Hair

But now, the Oscar winner says that her beauty routine is much more tame.

Even the most beautiful women in the world are prone to beauty mistakes. Though Angelina Jolie has maintained her shiny brown tresses for years, the actress flirted with some riskier styles in her youth — and she once tried to dye her hair using a method that would make stylists wince.

Though she was a self-described "tomboy" as a child, Jolie has admitted to having a bit of a rebellious streak when it came to her early beauty rituals. "I was a bit of a punk," the actress told InStyle. "Nowadays it’s very popular to dye your hair blue, for example. In my day you bleached it and used a Sharpie [for color]."

Even though she was open to changing her hair color — and admits that makeup can be used as a tool of creative self-expression — Jolie has never been much of a makeup gal. (And to be fair, her natural features don't need much to make them pop.) "I do either dark eyes or red lips. I have very full, big features, so if I did everything, I’d look a bit like a clown. It’d be just … a lot," she said.

The Oscar winner added: "I’ve never gone to a girlfriend’s house and played makeup. I’m not one of those women who say, 'Hey, let’s have a night and do each other’s hair,'" she said. "I’ve never been that, but I find that really sweet." Someone who is into the occasional "glam circle," however, is Jolie's 13-year-old daughter, Zahara.

"I remember she had a girlfriend over one night, and they said they were going to do dress-up and did I have any makeup?" Jolie shared. But, if you ask Jolie, her makeup kit isn't the most exciting to play around with. "I gave them my makeup, but I wear one color red, and I have black eyeliner and mascara — I have the most boring makeup kit," she shared. "And my daughter and I are different shades of brown. I now have a backup kit in case anybody wants to play."

She may not have a ton of colors on hand, but for the record, we'd hardly call Jolie's signature cat-eye and red-lip beauty look boring!
