This Is *Exactly* How Celebs Fake a Perfect Tan Year-Round
Fake-bake it 'till you make it.
If you were, say ... Kourtney Kardashian, escaping undesirable temperatures and rainy days would take nothing more than a quick call to your people. They’d book you a luxe little Mexican spa escape, and you’d return a few days later perfectly bronzed and glowy.
While you might not be a celebrity (at least not for the moment), that doesn’t mean you can't look the part. The trick: Fake-bake it 'till you make it by translating celebs’ tricks for looking forever-bronzed from the red carpet to real life.
“We all know there’s nothing better than a post-vacation glow, so I love to cheat that effect on my clients all year round,” says editorial and celebrity makeup artist Jared Lipscomb, who works his makeup magic on your favorite faces from Vanderpump Rules and Shahs of Sunset on the regular.
Ahead, Lipscomb shares with Most Wanted his favorite fake bakes and bronzers for face and body — plus the tricks he uses to get his celeb clients glowing.
Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base
Why Lipscomb loves it: “This unique cream-gel bronzer is one of my favorite products to create a subtle bronzed makeup look. The product is matte, buildable, and easy to blend.”
Pro tip: “I love to layer this product under and above foundation. I use my fingers to apply it first, framing the face, then after foundation I use a small fluffy brush to top off a little more warmth to the cheeks.”
Becca Bronzing Skin Perfector
Why Lipscomb loves it: “This bronzing primer is especially perfect for those low-maintenance looks. Simply apply it all over the face and neck before makeup for a truly ‘lit from within’ glow. It's ideal for those who never wear bronzer but want to dabble and for those who LOVE an extra-fierce bronzed look. You can even apply a traditional bronzer after the primer and foundation for megawatt glow!”
Pro tip: “On those ‘no makeup’ days, use this primer alone to blur fine lines, minimize pores, and give your skin a natural radiance. This universally flattering product will add luminosity and evenness to every skin tone in one quick step.”
Tarte Cosmetics Amazonian Clay Waterproof Bronzer
Why Lipscomb loves it: “This is your classic, slightly shimmery, powder bronzer! Tarte famously uses naturally occurring ingredients, so their makeup isn’t harsh and is great for day-to-day wear. This bronzer also has the perfect golden undertone: not too orange, not too red. There’s a light shimmer but it’s not overly sparkly or distracting. What really sells me, though, is that it’s waterproof, so no matter the weather you’ll stay bronzed and streak free.”
Pro tip: “Use a large fluffy brush and apply this product around the frame of your face--above your forehead, on the temples, cheeks, jaws, etc. Once most of the product is dispersed, use the brush to blend across the center of the face. Since it’s radiant, not matte, avoid using to contour the nose, cheeks or jaw line. Instead, think of where you’d naturally get sun and lightly dust in that area.”
Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body
Why Lipscomb loves it: “This is one of those ‘secret red-carpet’ products! The glow-y body cream boasts a list of ingredients that allow the skin to appear more supple and firm (caffeine, shiitake extract, menthol!). But it’s the glow that makes this hidden-gem a red carpet staple. The unique, metallic-copper tone may look intense when you squeeze it out, but once you begin applying all over your arms, décolletage, legs, etc. you’ll instantly see the magic in action! It doesn’t bronze you in the sense that it’ll make you look darker, but it will even out your skin and create a radiance unlike any other.”
Pro tip: “Try mixing a bit of this product in with your body lotion or body oil for a softer glow. You can also mix it in with your face moisturizer or SPF. You’ll look like a golden goddess even if it’s your first day at the beach or pool since last summer.”
Jergen’s Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer
Why Lipscomb loves it: “I always advise my clients to start using this subtle faux tanner about a week before any major event. This is the one semi-permanent tanning product I’ve found to be the most foolproof. It won’t stain your palms or streak your legs. Plus, it’s moisturizing, so you can replace your regular lotion with it.”
Pro tip: “Before applying, gently exfoliate body with a loofah or similar item. Once you apply, allow ample time to let product dry on skin before putting on clothes or laying under blankets. I personally avoid applying fake tanners on the neck area, as the skin is different there, so skip that area and use face makeup to color match your neck.”
Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs
Why Lipscomb loves it: “I am sure you’ve seen this product at your local pharmacy, sitting there on the bottom shelf. Well, I’m here to tell you, not only have I tried this ‘leg makeup’ but I actually love it. Now, first of all you should note, this is a makeup not a tanner—it is heavy and provides full coverage. Choose your shade carefully, and don’t go too dark, unless it works for your skin tone! I use this product on my clients’ arms, legs, shoulders, neck, backs, tummies … anywhere they might be showing some skin. I like to spray a bit on an area then use a makeup sponge or my hands, to blend it all over. Just like that, you have deeper, bronzed skin!”
Pro tip: “I love to keep this product for my clients who regularly spray tan. A spray tan will start to disappear in certain spots but stay in others. I use this to fill in the gaps!”
