Why hit a singles bar when you can meet the love of your life in your own living room? George Clooney recently sat down with David Letterman for the talk show host's new Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. While chatting with the television icon, Clooney shared the story of how he first met his now-wife Amal Clooney — and why he didn't even need to leave home to have the fated 2013 meeting. (We should all be so lucky.)
"It was the wildest thing," Clooney told Letterman. "A mutual friend of [mine and Amal] said, 'I'm stopping by and can I bring a friend?' And I was like, 'Of course.' And I got a call from my agent who called me and said, 'I met this woman who's coming to your house who you're going to marry.'" An agent and a matchmaker? Someone get this person a raise!
Naturally, Amal and George hit it off quickly — and the human-rights lawyer moved onto the meet-the-parents phase rather fast. "The funniest thing," Clooney said, "was my mom and dad were visiting so my parents were there and we just talked and we stayed up all night talking."
After the hours-long chat fest, the pair exchanged e-mail addresses and started lobbing notes back and forth. Still, Clooney didn't think too much of it. "I didn't know if she wanted to go out with me, I just thought we were buddies," he said.
Spolier alert: Amal did want to go out with him. Quickly, it became clear to Clooney that he and his pen pal were "more than just friends." And by February of 2017, the actor was ready to pop the question. One evening after a pasta dinner, "over champagne ... I told her there was a lighter to light the candle in the drawer, and she reached back and pulled out a ring," Clooney said. "And I did all the stuff, got down on my knee and did all the things you're supposed to do."
Apparently, the next thing you're supposed to do is have a lavish wedding in Venice, Italy, with star guests such as Ellen Barkin. Watch Barkin spill the tea on the legendary bash in the clip above. And, if you're looking for love, take heart: you may not need to leave your La-Z-Boy.
