Here's How Shane Coopersmith Really Feels About Working with Eddie Lucas
The Below Deckdeckhand opens up about the bosun's leadership in Season 8.
Managing the deck team hasn't exactly been a pleasure cruise for Eddie Lucas in Season 8 of Below Deck. In particular, the bosun has expressed frustration over deckhand Shane Coopersmith while trying to show him the ropes of luxury yachting.
Even though these two have had their tense moments this season of Below Deck, Shane actually appreciated Eddie's leadership style. "Yeah, I like him as a boss. I always call him Sensei Eddie on the boat. He was funny. The way he taught was pretty good. He had a lot of patience at the beginning," the deckhand shared during his appearance on the Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen After Show on December 7. "I think he was a pretty decent boss."
Still, Shane didn't have many regrets about his actions that we've seen so far this season of Below Deck, including calling Eddie out for his sarcasm after the deckhand radioed about the rain. "No, I don't regret it, because sarcasm is not constructive to the work environment at all," Shane said earlier in his appearance on WWHL (clip above). "And to be honest, the reason why I came on this boat was to spread knowledge about environmentalism and sustainability. So I went on this boat with a bigger mission, and that is what I plan on doing for the rest of my life."
He also didn't seem to mind Eddie seemingly being more patient while getting Izzy Wouters up to speed when she left the interior and joined the deck crew earlier this season. "Yeah, you know, it's just a lot easier to work with someone who is much more experienced and a seasoned yachtie," Shane said. "So, I think he enjoyed teaching Izzy more so than me because he knew that she was gonna catch on quicker solely because she's done the job a lot."
Shane said that he was aware that he needed to improve as a deckhand before Izzy gave him that head's up as well. "I mean, I knew I had to step it up. I was aware of that," Shane said on WWHL. "It was good to know the crew was behind me, telling me to step it up."
He added that he was also "juggling" his mission of educating others about sustainability on top of his deckhand responsibilities throughout the charter season. "If it got in the way of me being a great employee on Below Deck, that's OK with me," Shane shared. "I think it's a lot more pressing that we care about our planet and that we realize our planet is in peril right now. So I'm OK taking a couple blows on Below Deck if it means spreading my message on sustainability."
