Money is often at the root of relationship issues, and that includes the touchy topic of who’s the breadwinner in a couple.

How to Watch

The Valley’s Brittany Cartwright said she now relates to that sentiment, recalling when she and her now-estranged husband, Jax Taylor, left Vanderpump Rules — admitting she was making more money at the time.

That can be a highly charged situation. In fact, research has tied women's income to marital happiness. After all, who's bringing home the bacon can alter the power dynamic in a relationship.

Here's how the situation with the finances led to problems with Jax and Brittany.

How did Brittany’s money lead to problems with Jax?

During a sit-down with Vanderpump Rules After Show, Brittany was asked about being a breadwinner and how money affects couples.

“Me and Jax have gone through this when we were not on Vanderpump Rules anymore,” Brittany said. “The roles kind of flipped.”

Prior to exiting the series in 2020, Jax had been the one who was pulling in a bigger income. But that situation then did a 180-degree turn, with Brittany pulling in cash from several jobs, including a partnership with weight loss company Jenny Craig.

“I was definitely making more money,” she admitted. “I can tell it hurt Jax’s ego.”

She maintained that men with certain personalities might suffer more psychological bruising from this money dynamic more than others. She put Jax and Scheana Shay’s husband, Brock Davies, together in this category.

“Being an alpha male like Brock is and Jax is … I think that it can be hard,” she said.

Brittany, a former model and Hooters waitress, no doubt takes her earning power seriously.

Shared business ventures with her estranged husband include their When Reality Hits with Jax and Brittany podcast and the sports bar Jax’s Studio City.

Brittany’s individual money streams come from her role as an influencer and a Jenny Craig ambassador, a lucrative gig that earned her $2 million, per Jax.

Like his estranged wife, Jax has his own sources of income. His ventures include paid partnerships with businesses behind hair growth and lawn care.

He also claimed his association with Cameo, an online messaging service, has earned him about $450,000, according to Business Insider.

Breadwinning isn’t a topic reserved just for Brittany and Jax. Brock told Vanderpump Rules After Show that he grapples with “knowing that I'm not bringing home the money anymore,”

“And I think it adds so much tension to Scheana and I because she's providing for the whole family. She’s the main breadwinner," he admitted.

Bottom line: No matter how you slice it, relationships are challenging.
