Leah shared on Instagram on June 1 that she would be having a biopsy performed on her left breast after an MRI discovered a "questionable cyst." She was diagnosed with lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) last year, which puts her at a higher risk of developing breast cancer, and underwent a lumpectomy in October 2019 to remove pre-cancerous cysts in her right breast area.

The Daily Dish spoke to Captain Sandy over the phone just days prior to Leah's biopsy, and she opened up about what it was like being on charter during this season of Below Deck Mediterranean amid her girlfriend's cancer scare. "FaceTime really helped. I stay focused on my job. I try to keep my emotions in check. Leah’s family was around her, but we talked every day on FaceTime," Captain Sandy, who also called Leah a "beautiful soul" during the interview, recalled. "I was there every moment. When she went in for the surgery, I was on the phone with her the minute she came out."

Leah's margins were all clear following her lumpectomy last fall, but she gets an MRI done every six months to make sure no cancer has developed. "No treatments like chemo or radiation were needed so please get checked! It’s worth it!!" Leah underscored the importance of early detection in her post on Instagram on June 1. "Praying for good results!! Love you all!!"

Captain Sandy, who was by Leah's side during the biopsy and her recovery, shared a similar sentiment on Twitter that day. "It’s all about awareness, early detection [and] being proactive," she tweeted. "Praying for good results!!!"

Leah then shared the good news that the results of her biopsy came back, and she was cancer free. "Cyst was changing due to age and hormones!! Praise God!!! I’ll get MRI in 6 months!" Leah wrote in the post. "Be proactive everyone !!!! Love you ALL."

Captain Sandy thanked fans for their love and support as she also shared Leah's happy news on Twitter. "[Thank you] for your good thoughts [and] positive vibes!" she tweeted.
