Captain Sandy Yawn Brings Girlfriend Leah Shafer to BravoCon: She’s “Cancer-Free”
The Below Deck Mediterranean captain opens up about her partner’s cancer journey.
When Captain Sandy Yawn appeared at BravoCon 2019 alongside her fellow Below Deck and Below Deck Mediterranean yachties during the Below Deck: Get Nauti panel on Friday (November 15), she shared some exciting news with the fans: that her girlfriend, Leah Shafer, is cancer-free after receiving results from a lumpectomy in October.
“She’s good. She’s out there somewhere [in the crowd],” she told told the crowd in the Grand Ballroom, before confirming that she’s currently “cancer-free.” The happy announcement met with cheers.
Doctors discovered precancerous cysts in Leah’s right breast area over the summer and she was diagnosed with lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), which means she has a higher risk of developing breast cancer. In an Instagram video, Leah explained, "So now really all I have to do is just go get checked every six months, get the MRI, continue with the mammograms and the ultrasounds and just be on top of it. It's all about catching things early, so that's the idea — especially, I have LCIS, so I need to still be cautious."
