Dr. Jackie Walters is pleasantly surprised by the actions of Millennials and Gen Z, who have been actively protesting across the world in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. During the June 22 Instagram Live panel, Amplify Our Voices: An Open Dialogue on Being Black in America, the Married to Medicine cast member explained why she’s been proud of young people recently.

“So let me shout out this generation, though,” said Dr. Jackie. “Honey. Oh...my god. They’re not us. And you’ve seen the thing, ‘We are not our ancestors,’ and they can certainly say, ‘We are not our mamas. We are not our aunts.’ Oh my god.”

“You know what? They take me back to the Martin Luther King era. Like, we’re gonna die for right. We’re gonna stand for right. We’re gonna do whatever we need to do, we’re gonna get your attention, because this is wrong and we’re not going to accept it anymore,” she continued. “I’m so excited. I owe them an apology.”

Dr. Jackie also noted that one of her nieces attended the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, while another is currently finishing her education there. She explained how proud she is of them, as well as their classmates, for speaking up to support Black Lives Matter together.

“To see a picture of those Black students standing there with ‘I can’t breathe,’ and saying ‘Black Lives Matter,’ I had tears,” said Dr. Jackie, who added that she was one of only seven Black students during her first year of undergrad. “To see them standing there in solidarity and say Black Lives Matter, my heart. Oh my goodness. I am so excited.”
