Guerdy Abraira updates fans on her cancer journey during Season 6 of RHOM
When discussing her decision to openly share her health journey with fans on Season 6 of RHOM, Guerdy shared at BravoCon back in November 2023, "Everyone's like, 'Why did you share?' and then I go, 'Why not?'"
"I was told I was going to be able to be treated, and I'll be OK eventually, but we're going to go through a hard time," she continued. "And to me, I said to myself, 'If I can show the good and the bad, then it's only better. Because a lot of people who have cancer, they feel like they have the plague, and they don't want to share, and they feel like something's wrong with them and they go into hiding. And I said to myself, 'I'm not doing that. I'm not going out like that,'...Now it's time to really be real on reality TV and show the bad as well. The good, bad, the ugly."
The RHOM cast member took to Instagram on May 10, 2023 to share the initial news of her diagnosis. "In March, I found out some news about my health," she wrote in a candid post. "I was in St. Barts having the time of my life when my doctor called me with results following a regular mammogram checkup. I have breast cancer. It took me a while to process it all and this is why I took a break from social media last month as many noticed. Many of you reached out to check on me and I am thankful for your caring gestures."
In June 2023, Guerdy returned to Instagram to share that she underwent surgery. "THANK YOU to every single person for your words of support," she captioned her post, which included a video message. "[Y]ou guys are my GUERDIANS. All your prayers definitely got me through my surgery! The fight is not over as you know but just the beginning…but getting the surgery to remove the cancer at least was an emotional 'win' for sure."
In the video message, Guerdy told her followers, "Hi everyone, I just wanted to come on and just say thank you so much. Your prayers, I felt the love, I just want to tell you how deep and amazing and intense your show of love has been. And your amazing positive messages have been."
In September 2023, the Miami beauty took to Instagram to share another encouraging update on both her physical and mental health. An Instagram Live broadcast, which was converted into a reel, captured Guerdy at a Memorial Health System facility as she celebrated her last round of chemotherapy. The mother of two was surrounded by medical staff, as well as her husband, Russell Abraira, and their sons, 14-year-old Miles and 9-year-old Liam.
“Last chemo round!!!” she captioned the September 2023 Instagram post. “On to 20 rounds of radiation but that’s cake walk compared to this!!!!! THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR KEEPING ME IN YOUR PRAYERS. Thank you also to my amazing oncology team and chemo nurses… (I love you Rose, best nurse ever).”
Throughout Season 6 of RHOM, Guerdy has not held back sharing with viewers how she has navigated her cancer diagnosis, including taking fans inside emotional moments with her family as seen in the Dec. 27 episode. She later reflected on that moment, writing on Instagram, ""Got so many DMs about this scene from yesterday’s new #RHOM episode ON [Bravo] - seemed to have resonated with so many mothers out there dealing with breast cancer and having to have 'that talk.' Thank u for the support."
During the Jan. 3 episode of RHOM, Guerdy shared with the world another step in her journey as she underwent surgery following her breast cancer diagnosis. In the months since, she has continued to update fans on her progress, revealing in an Instagram post on Jan. 1, 2024: "Ohhh 2023…boy did you test my strength…nice try-Now onwards! Thankful to my family and all of you who prayed and stood by me throughout this trying year... I'm still standing."
On the Jan. 17 episode of RHOM, Guerdy gave viewers another update on her health journey as she prepared to undergo another surgery. “I just cannot believe I have to go under the knife again,” she said in a confessional. “They didn’t clear the margins, and they have to cut out more cancerous cells they weren’t able to clear the first time. I just can’t believe that this nightmare is continuing. “
At the end of the episode, Guerdy shared with her castmate Alexia Nepola tha she recently informed of her having a “high likelihood” of her cancer to reoccur, which ultimately places her in the “chemo zone.”
Guerdy Abraira husband and friends offer support during her cancer journey
Guerdy revealed previously how Julia Lemigova's wife Martina Navratilova has offered her support as they each face heath journies and she's also, of course, had her friends in the RHOM cast by her side as well as her kids and husband, Russell. She paid tribute to her spouse months ago, writing, "Bonnie to his Clyde… HAPPY 21 YEAR WEDDING ANNIVERSARY my love! Met you 28 years ago, and from that day forth, I knew that my life would change forever in the best way. Thanks for riding this long ride with me and holding on for dear life through the ups and downs."
