Saying you’re sorry is never easy — especially when you’re a celebrity in the public eye. Add on that you’re making amends for wronging your love, and it can be a sobering and humbling experience.
Mila Kunis, who is now happily married with kids to her That ‘70s Show co-star Ashton Kutcher, recently extended apologies to her ex-boyfriend Macaulay Culkin. "I f---- up, I was an a--hole in my 20's ... it's f---- up what I did and it's f---- up how I did it,” she confessed on actor Dax Shepard's podcast, Armchair Expert. Mila added that everyone has forgiven each other for what went down.
She's not the only one. Here are nine other stars who put on a brave face to say “I’m sorry” to their unsuspecting partners.
Jax Taylor to Brittany Cartwright
Vanderpump Rules' Jax Taylor cheated on his love Brittany Cartwright — and it almost destroyed their love. Brittany had to live out his confession (again) when it aired last December. Jax then opened up to US Weekly, stating, “I really, really regret what I did. It’s a mistake we’re working out right now.” He blamed his actions on his tendency to sabotage a relationship when it gets serious. “It was a stupid mistake that I’m paying for every single day.” Brittany wasn’t even the first girl he even had to apologize to for his digressions (remember his apology for cheating on former girlfriend Stassi Schroeder in season 5?). How did this most recent admission of regret work out for Jax? He and Brittany got engaged this past June.
Selena Gomez to The Weeknd
While it wasn’t a straight-up apology, Selena Gomez did make a cryptic post on her Instagram account after The Weeknd deleted all images of her from his social media — signifying the end of their 10-month relationship in 2017. The "Hands To Myself" singer simply wrote “all apologies” on her Instagram while sitting in a stairwell and looking contrite (maybe concrete surroundings make the apology feel more heartfelt!). Selena has learned from the best about big public apologies. Her ex Justin Bieber allegedly recorded his song "Sorry" as an apology to Selena.
Russell Brand to Katy Perry
Katy Perry had no idea that her ex-husband Russell Brand would end their 14-month marriage — via text message — back in 2011. It took a lot longer for the comedian to take on some of the blame of the marriage’s demise. In a 2017 interview with US Weekly, Russell started, “I try not to project my problems onto other people and perhaps I've not always been like that,” alluding to his treatment of his former spouse. He even admits that he now thinks fondly of her, telling W Channel, "I still feel very warm towards her. I feel like, when I hear about her or see her, 'Awe, there's that person. There's that person in the world.'"
Kristen Stewart to Robert Pattinson
Twilight stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were the dream couple — until Kristen was caught having an affair with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders in 2012. Kristen issued a public statement, saying "I'm deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I've caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry." (Kristen may have wanted to extend that apology to Rupert’s wife, Liberty Ross, who ultimately divorced Rupert after the affair was revealed.)
Chris Brown to Rihanna
Let's been honest, in this situation, there are no words ... but Chris Brown tried to find a few to apologize to his former girlfriend Rihanna. Breezy was arrested in 2009 for battering The “Umbrella” singer. He then released a video on his website to apologize to fans for his behavior, declaring that he was sad and ashamed of his conduct. He also revealed that he had repeatedly told Rihanna he was sorry. But a public apology wasn’t enough to appease this crime. Chris was later charged with assault likely to cause great bodily harm and making criminal threats. He served several years of probation for his actions.
Tiger Woods to Elin Nordegren
Cheating on your spouse definitely deserves an apology. That’s the situation Tiger Woods found himself in back in 2010. The tennis great, who had been married to Elin for six years, appeared in a live broadcast to make his feelings of regret public. Tiger apologized to pretty much everyone, stating, "I had affairs, I cheated. What I did was not acceptable, and I am the only person to blame." He continued that "Elin and I have started the process of discussing the damage caused by my behavior. As she pointed out to me, my real apology to her will not come in the form of words. It will come from my behavior over time." There was really no need for Elin to say "I’m sorry" back – even after she smashed his Escalade with a 9-iron. The two divorced shortly after and Elin received a $100 million “I’m so sorry” check in the divorce settlement.
Jude Law to Sienna Miller
Jude Law and Sienna Miller’s eight-month engagement came to a crashing end in 2005. Jude’s nanny Daisy Wright revealed that she and Jude had been knocking boots while he was filming All the King’s Men in New Orleans. The actor released an official statement to the British Press Association which read, “I am deeply ashamed and upset that I’ve hurt Sienna and the people most close to us … I want to publicly apologize to Sienna and our respective families for the pain that I have caused. He added, “There is no defense for my actions which I sincerely regret.” He and Sienna tried to make it work for a while, but finally called it quits for good in 2011.
Hugh Grant to Elizabeth Hurley
It’s been 23 years since Hugh Grant’s embarrassing arrest after he was caught engaging in a lewd act with a prostitute. At the time, Hugh was dating model Elizabeth Hurley. The Bridget Jones's Diary star took to The Tonight Show to make his amends. He told then-host Jay Leno, "You know in life what's a good thing to do and a bad thing to do. I did a bad thing." Hugh went on to say, “It’s not funny when you've got someone like [Hurley] hurt.” Hugh and Elizabeth tried to keep their relationship going for a few more years, but decided they were better off as friends in 2000.
Arnold Schwarzenegger to Maria Shriver
Yeah, fathering a love child with your housekeeper definitely garners an apology. That was the case for Arnold, who found himself apologizing to his then-wife Maria Shriver after 25 years of marriage for fathering a love child with his housekeeper. “After leaving the governor's office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago. I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family," said the former governor of California. "There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry." Not surprisingly, Maria filed for divorce after the news came to light.
