Ryan Serhant: What I've Learned About Love

The newly engaged agent admits he's had to make compromises with his fiance.

By Jocelyn Vena

As one of New York City's top real estate agents, Ryan Serhant knows he's not always the easiest fella to date, or these days, be engaged to. But he shares that his fiance, Emilia, has helped him realize there's always room for compromise in a relationship.

So what are the most important lessons he's learned about being in love? "Like every normal couple, Emilia and I also argue about things like house chores, and we even share sideways glances about the toothpaste cap (I don't understand why she puts it back on!)," he writes for Glamour.

Ryan notes that one of the biggest discussions the recently-engaged couple, er, engage in is how their dinner dates, which he sometimes suggests at the last minute, fit into his hectic schedule.

"At first, I never really understood why she got so angry about these things, but then I placed myself in her shoes and it all made sense," he said. "We live together, and even if Emilia rejects a dinner date with me, it's clear from the moment I open our apartment door that all we want to do is enjoy the time we have together."

Ryan proposed to Emilia last month in splashy proposal the middle of Times Square. And with several weeks of engagement bliss behind him, the MDLNY broker is offering up what he's learned about love and relationships.

"At the end of the day, relationships should be your serenity and not add more stress to an overwhelming workday. I've discovered that most of our arguments are about insignificant things. I think a good relationship requires work, excellent communication, compromise, and mutual respect," he said.

"Emilia and I have grown to appreciate our differing points of view," he continued. "If you respect individuality, it is easy to agree to disagree with your significant other; nobody will ever agree on everything if being truly authentic."
