What did you get for a holiday bonus this year? If you're like many employees around the country, you got $0 in cash, but a very abundant selection of day-old holiday doughnuts and cookies in the conference room.
Well, 800 employees of a single company in Iowa got something way better than that: The president of the company announced he'd be taking the whole entire crew on a weeklong cruise through the Caribbean.
Travel + Leisure reports that Gary Bertch, who with his wife co-founded Bertch Cabinet, announced earlier in the month that the whole company would set sail together once it met its annual goals. He did the same thing last year as an incentive — and it worked, so he fulfilled his promise. The big bonuses in back-to-back years came after a tough time of cuts in the wake of the recession, so employees were even more jazzed.
They leave January 8. “We’ve got four charter aircraft that will be flying directly to Miami Sunday and staying at a nice five-star hotel,” Bertch told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. The next day, they'll file onto a cruise ship for a week around the Caribbean including a stop in Cozumel, Mexico.
By the way? Last time the Bertch crew went on a cruise together... they drank all the beer on the ship. So clearly, they know how to party together.
Depending on how you feel about your own co-workers, this idea might sound like either the best week ever... or a recipe for awkward confrontations in very close quarters with no escape.
But there's no arguing the festivity, nor the team-building potential, of the move.
