Yes, fellow pasta lover, you read that correctly. And yes, this is (probably) the greatest day of your life, because we finally, kind of, sort of, have scientific proof that pasta not only tastes amazing, but can also help you lose weight. Bless you science, for all that you do.
A new study by Italian researchers (of course) tracked 23,000 Italians to learn how their diet correlated with their weight. The results, published in Nutrition & Diabetes, found that individuals who consumed pasta in moderation had smaller waistbands than individuals who ate large amounts of it or who completely avoided pasta altogether.
As Gothamist points out, the scientists found that the people eating moderate amounts of pasta were also more likely to eat a Mediterranean diet, which correlates with greater health and a lower Body Mass Index (BMI).
Of course it probably helps that in Italy pasta is often served as a smaller course, not the main meal, and certainly not the enormous mountain of noodles served in a kiddie-pool-sized bowl that’s so popular at U.S. restaurant chains.
The bottom line here is that fears and trepidations about cutting or entirely avoiding carbs may actually be working against us. Plenty of research shows that by completely cutting food groups from our diets, we’re more prone to cheating or breaking our healthy habits. Instead, as with most things in life, the M-word is key. Yes, moderation.
Also key when it comes to pasta-eating: the P-word. Freshly grated Parmesan. Don’t skimp.
