Celebrity Women Who Divorced Their Husbands Then Found True Love With Another Woman

Like J. Crew boss Jenna Lyons, they all found lasting love with a female they knew.

There’s been a trend of successful, once straight (by their accounts) women who have divorced their husbands and found lasting love with another woman. All of the women here have written or spoken about how their heart landed on the woman they love, and each of their stories is open-minded and took each of them by surprise.

The latest to find true love with a woman is famed author Glennon Doyle Melton, Oprah’s latest book club choice and author of “Love Warrior,” who took to Facebook to reveal she was in a serious relationship with retired soccer star Abby Wambach.

On Sunday, she posted a smiling picture of herself and Abby  on Sunday, writing, “Oh my God, she is so good to me. She loves me for all the things I've always wanted to be loved for. She's just my favorite. My person.”

Both women are newly single, with Abby currently in the process of divorcing fellow soccer star, and wife of three years, Sarah Huffman. In August, Glennon announced her divorce from her husband Craig.

She wrote: “Feels like the world could use all the love it can get right now. So today, I'm going to share with you my new love. Her name is Abby. You might recognize her from soccer.”

Glenn said her ex Craig supports the relationship and the duo, their three kids, and Abby make a “beautiful, modern family.”

“They're lucky kids, to be surrounded by so much love. We have family dinners together — all six of us — and Abby cooks. (She is an AMAZING chef because Jesus loves me). We go to the kids' school parties together. We are a modern, beautiful family. Our children are loved. So loved. And because of all of that love, they are brave. When Craig and I sat them down to tell them about Abby I started by saying: “In our family, we live and tell the truth about who we are no matter what, and then love each other through it -- and I’m about to show you how that’s done. She has this sense of country and honor and chivalry that feels beautiful to me. She cares about the vulnerable- children and animals especially. She’s unwaveringly good to Craig, to the kids, to Sister and to all my people. And oh my God, she is so good to me. She loves me for all the things I’ve always wanted to be loved for. She’s just my favorite. My person. Remember in ‘Love Warrior’ how hard I struggled to understand what being in love meant?

I get it now. I get it. I am in love. And I’m really, deeply happy.”

Glennon’s friend and another Oprah Book Club pick, Liz Gilbert, who famously penned “Eat, Pray, Love,” surprised herself when she fell in love with her best female friend.

In her own lengthy Facebook post, Liz revealed she had entered a relationship with Rayya Elias, her longtime friend who was recently diagnosed with incurable pancreatic and liver cancer.

The author split from her second husband José Nunes this past July, and admitted that Rayya was the reason behind the split.

“In the moment I first learned of Rayya’s diagnosis, a trap door opened at the bottom of my heart (a trap door I didn’t even know was there) and my entire existence fell straight through that door. From that moment forward, everything became about HER. I cancelled everything in my life that could be cancelled, and I went straight to her side, where I have been ever since. She's my best friend, yes, but it's always been bigger than that. She's my role model, my traveling companion, my most reliable source of light, my fortitude, my most trusted confidante. In short, she is my PERSON.

“Death — or the prospect of death — has a way of clearing away everything that is not real, and in that space of stark and utter realness, I was faced with this truth: I do not merely love Rayya; I am in love with Rayya. And I have no more time for denying that truth. The thought of someday sitting in a hospital room with her, holding her hand and watching her slide away, without ever having let her (or myself!) know the extent of my true feelings for her...well, that thought was unthinkable.”

Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon shocked fans when she started dating activist Christine Marinoni back in 2004. The two have a five-year-old son together, Max Ellington Nixon-Marinoni, and co-parent Cynthia’s daughter Sam, and Charles, 14, she shares with her schoolteacher ex-husband Danny Mozes. The two were together from 1988 until 2003.

Cynthia told The Advocate of the relationship: “It wasn't something in me that was waiting to come out. It was like, this person is undeniable. How can I let this person walk by?Maybe I'm just lucky, but I feel like Christine is so amazing with our kids – because they're our kids. I feel like falling in love with her is part of being amazed at how she makes our family so much better.”

Stylish J. Crew creative director and president Jenna Lyons divorcing her artist husband of nine years, Vincent Mazeau, in 2011 and began a relationship with jewelery executive Courtney Crangi.

The two often pose on red carpets with Jenna’s son Beckett and Courtney’s daughter Coco.

At the time, a source told The New York Post that Jenna fell in love with Courtney after meeting her through friends.

In 2013, actress Maria Bello penned a “Modern Love” column for The New York Timesrevealing she had fallen in love with her female best friend, Clare Munn.

“As I continued to look through photos, I came across a black-and-white one of my best friend and me taken on New Year’s Eve,” she wrote. “We looked so happy, I couldn’t help but smile. It didn’t occur to me, until that soul-searching moment in my garden, that we could perhaps choose to love each other romantically.”

The two have since split, and Maria is now dating 29-year-old Elijah Allan-Blitz after splitting from Clare. Bello and Munn were last photographed together in June at the middle school graduation of her son Jackson, whom she shares with ex Dan McDermott.
