Lonely Dog and Lonelier Duck Become Best Friends in the Wake of Tragedy

This is interspecies love at its finest!

Patrick and Kirsten Riley of Strout, Minnesota adopted a Husky named Max when he was just five years old. The sweet dog quickly bonded with the couple’s other Husky, Sasha, and the two puppers developed a very close friendship.

So when Sasha died, Max (now 12 years old) fell into a deep depression — until the Rileys adopted a duckling named Quackers who was also craving companionship.

“[Quackers] was without any friends, and so Max would sit next to his pen all the time and I think they just kind of bonded that way,” Patrick told CBS Minnesota. “After we let him out, they just never left each other’s side.”

Adds Kirsten, “They sleep together, they eat together, they drink together, they go for walks together down the road. Everything is together.”

The unusual pair has become something of a spectacle in their small Minnesotan town. They spend the majority of their time sitting down the road at “their spot,” and a neighbor notes that they are the highlight of her daily commute. “Sometimes on my way home I actually hope they’re out there because they’re just too precious to look at.”
