Their musical styles are so different, you’d never think they’d mesh.
But Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton performed their duet, Go Ahead and Break My Heart, on Monday night’s episode of The Voice, and they had major chemistry on stage together.
Blake took the stage first, with Gwen, in a sheer, jeweled gown, soon joining him to sing.
Blake explained the collaboration with his girlfriend to People, calling it an honest portrayal of what the two had gone through in their respective divorces, and then falling for each other.
"I guess I'm nervous in a new kind of way," he said. "I'm excited because this is a song Gwen and I feel so close to for obvious reasons. It's as brutally honest and straightforward as you can be in a love song."
The couple did two takes of the performance for the crowd, and held eye contact throughout both. After the first take, Blake gave Gwen a hug and a kiss on the forehead. After the second take, the one that aired, he gave her a hug.
The two wrote the song together, with no help, says Blake. It came from the two having trust issues in the beginning of their relationship, and wondering if they wanted to continue on and explore what they were feeling.
Gwen said recently the song will be track 9 on Blake’s new album, If I'm Honest, which will be released May 20.
