The Forecast Says These Are the Umbrellas You Need to Weather Any Weather

Umbrella envy is a thing. Here's how you fix that.

By Mitra Sorrells

An umbrella is one of those accessories you probably don’t think about… until you’re outside and you feel that first drop. I got caught in a shower recently and reached in my bag for my umbrella, only to open it and realize it was bent and completely useless for its simple purpose of keeping me dry. As I stared at that mangled mix of metal and nylon (it just looked so sad), I also started to notice the functional and chic umbrellas bouncing past me — and getting some serious umbrella envy.

Hence began my search for a new umbrella. I’ve rounded up some of the best options you can buy right now. Some are full-size, some are foldable. Some look very grownup and others are a bit more whimsical. Because what better time for whimsy than in a downpour?!

1. Sky Umbrella

Blue skies will always be in view with this attractive umbrella, which spans 38 inches. Other cool functions: It opens and closes manually and has a wooden handle.

2. Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella

This is a durable umbrella that’s less than 12 inches when folded — perfect to throw in a purse or backpack. Push the button on the rubberized handle to open or close the 36-inch canopy.

3. Totes Auto Wooden Stick Umbrella

This reminds me of the umbrella my grandpa used, which is a good thing. It’s got a timeless, classy appeal and it opens to a really wide 48 inches — plenty of coverage for you and a walking companion. It has an auto open/close button, a sturdy wooden handle, and a great price.

4. Bubble Auto Open Print Umbrella

I had a bubble-style umbrella as a kid and when I saw this I thought, why did I ever get rid of mine? The 34-inch wide dome comes down lower than traditional umbrellas, keeping wind and rain off your face — and hair! The designs are adorable and they’re printed on clear plastic so you can easily see where you are going.

5. Lewis N. Clark Compact Travel Umbrella

This is a budget-friendly option that is also really sturdy. It has a 38-inch canopy, push button to open and close, weighs just 10 ounces, folds to 11 inches, and comes in five colors.

6. GustBuster Metro Umbrella

With a 43-inch canopy, this is one of the larger folding umbrellas we’ve found. The double layer vented design helps this umbrella resist winds up to 55 MPH. It comes in eight colors.

7. Crimson Heart Umbrella

This umbrella is so cute you might actually wish for a rainy day! The bright red canopy and heart design will put a smile on your face — and the face of anyone walking behind you. And it provides a generous 43 inches of coverage.

8. Swing Trek LiteFlex Umbrella

This is a great choice for outdoor adventurers. While it does not fold down, it is super light — just seven ounces — and comes with a mesh shoulder strap so you can wear it slung across your back. The canopy is 39 inches in diameter.

9. Color Spectrum Travel Umbrella

You’ll see rainbows all around with this colorful, collapsible umbrella from the Museum of Modern Art. It has a 37-inch span and lightweight aluminum shaft.
