Breaking up should be the end of a relationship, but not for some celebrities. Even though the love was gone, an official end date of their coupledom took forever. Check out these famous couples who took forever to call it quits -- for good.
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck
After a 10-year marriage, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck announced their split in 2015. Ben moved out of their home… and into the garden home on the property. Despite their difficult decision, Jennifer and Ben remain committed to co-parenting their three children. They spent so much time together after announcing the split, many thought that the couple would reconcile. But this April, PEOPLE reported they filed nearly identical divorce papers, and that the two are on amicable terms as their proceedings progress.
Khloé Kardashian and Lamar Odom
Khloé Kardashian and Lamar Odom’s marriage was fraught with trouble, including Odom's drug use and infidelity which compelled Koko to file for divorce in December 2013. But Khloé called it off to provide Lamar support after his near-fatal overdose at a Nevada brothel in 2015, and his subsequent hospital recovery. It would be more than six months before she refiled for divorce, which Lamar reportedly anticipated. The papers went through on December 9, 2016, and they were officially single 11 days later.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver
In 2011 revelations surfaced that actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had fathered a child with his housekeeper Mildred Baena, while he was married to Maria Shriver, and she filed for divorce to end their 25-year marriage. Maria found the process painful, and pricey -– it took three years for them to amicably split their $400 million fortune. Their marriage officially ended in December 2014.
Chris Rock and Malaak Compton-Rock
When Chris Rock split from Malaak Compton, who had married his wife in 1996, it was no laughing matter. It's ugly and showing no signs of getting better or ending soon. The comedian filed for divorce in December 2014, and Malaak, the mother of his two daughters, demanded her fair share of his estimated $70 million fortune. While Malaak signed a prenup, it was voided because the couple had been married for so long. Chris made things even more complicated when he refused to claim custody over a child they had been raising but never formally adopted.The bitter divorce was complete in August 2016.
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony married in 2004, but the relationship had fizzled by 2011. They couple separated but didn’t seem to be in a rush to make their split official. J.Lo starting dating choreographer Casper Smart. Three years would pass before the divorce proceedings finalized, just in time for Marc to marry Shannon De Lima, his fourth wife, in 2014.
Amy Pohler and Will Arnett
In 2012 Amy Poehler and Will Arnett were in the process of ending their nine-year marriage, and that took two years. Will didn’t file for divorce in April 2014. And then it was another two years before they became officially single in August 2016. The two said over and over they felt more like best friends than a romantic couple.
Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman
Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman briefly separated in 2014 after 32 years of marriage. They decided to give their marriage another go, but they officially broke up in 2017. To clarify, they are not divorced by law. With more than 40 years invested in their relationship, they have chosen to just be separated. Danny and Rhea have and continue to remain friends and supportive of their respective careers.
Mel Brown and Stephen Belafonte
Former Spice Girl Mel Brown filed for divorce from Stephen Belafonte, her husband of 10 years, this past March. Brown claimed that Belafonte had sexual transgressions outside their marriage since its onset. A victim of reportedly repeated domestic abuse, Mel had been trying to leave the marriage for years but feared the repercussions. Only time will tell how long this feud will last.
Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow
The couple threw everyone for a loop when they revealed their "conscious uncoupling" in March 2014. But like almost everything Gwyneth does, the separation was handled with grace and class. Over the next two years, they co-parented amicably and even took a family vacation together. Chris and Gwyneth finally became officially uncoupled by law in July 2016.
