We’ve suddenly got a hankering for a messy plate of sizzling hot wings. Whether it's because Super Bowl Sunday is coming up, or because these chefs' decadent spins on chicken wings are some of the most brilliant we've seen yet—who knows. Here's the play-by-play on 5 spots across the U.S. where you can score over-the-top versions of these maddeningly addictive treats.
Kung Pao Chicken Wings, Talde, New York
At Brooklyn's Talde, star chef, owner and Top Chef alum Dale Talde is cooking up some seriously must-try Kung Pao Chicken Wings. The deep-fried wings are perfectly crisp on the outside and topped with a sweet-and-sour sauce, peanuts, cilantro and scallions—and a super-creamy buttermilk ranch sauce on the side. (Warning: You'll want to pound that down like a cocktail.)
Miss Hay’s Stuffed Chicken Wings, NOLA Restaurant, New Orleans
Celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse serves up killer wings at his NOLA Restaurant in New Orleans. A long-time staple on the menu, Miss Hay’s Stuffed Chicken Wings are first plumped up with a mix of ground pork, shrimp, mushrooms, onions, celery, cilantro and fish sauce. Next, the wings are baked, then wok-fried to perfection. And to up the ante just a little bit more, they're joined on the plate by a house-made hoisin sauce for dipping.
Tiger Wings, Ace Eat Serve, Denver
What’s not to like about Ace Eat Serve in Denver, where you can not only challenge your friends to a game of Pong, but also chow down on tasty Asian food and sip craft cocktails until late-night? Grab an order of Tiger Wings fried up in a wok until they're crisp, and then loaded with a sauce that combines sweet and spicy sambal relish and salty fish sauce. They’re also available sans the sauce, but why? Photo by Ace Eat Serve/Facebook
Wings, Dirty Birds, San Diego
Dirty Birds sports bar in San Diego knows its sauces. The bar offers 33 choices, from traditional Buffalo to apple bourbon chipotle, garlic Parmesan, and chicken enchilada smothered with Jack. So many choices, so little time. PS Definitely save room for the mac n’ cheese balls, jalapeno-and-bacon-infused and covered in spicy cheese sauce.
Chicken Wings, The Hay Merchant, Houston
Place your bet on how many wings you can put away at Houston's The Hay Merchant. Order them in portions of six, 12, 30 or even 60, and choose from four versions: classic hot sauce, General Tso's, Korean gochujang or Thai PB&J (the house take on spicy Thai peanut sauce made with peanut butter and grape jelly). Go big and try them all, and wash everything down with any of the 80 craft beers behind the bar. Photo by Julie Soefer.
