Captain Sandy Yawn Addresses Kiko Lorran's Firing on Below Deck Med

After letting Hindrigo "Kiko" Lorran go in the middle of dinner service during a four-day charter this season of Below Deck Mediterranean, Captain Sandy Yawn addressed the chef's departure during her appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen: @ Home on August 3.

Captain Sandy explained that she made her decision based on what would be best for everyone on The Wellington, from the charter guests to the crew.

"When someone says their main goal is to prove to themselves that they really want to make this work, it's two part. He's proving to himself that he can do this when he doesn't clearly have the skill set," she said in the above clip. "So, for me, that's really selfish, because when you're making it about you, and you're going to tackle this, but you don't have the proper training, you're affecting the whole. As a captain, I have to make sure the whole is getting everything they need, and Kiko was only thinking about Kiko and what his goal was."

She went on to say that Kiko should have recognized that he wasn't ready to be in the galley of The Wellington. "I wish Kiko would have come to me and said, 'You know what, I'm in over my head. We need to get another chef.' I would have loved that," Captain Sandy said. "I gave him opportunity after opportunity."

Captain Sandy recalled one such conversation with Kiko during her appearance on WWHL: @ Home. "In fact, I showed him a canoe. I said, 'You see that canoe? If I was the captain of that canoe and I mastered rowing it and I got offered this 188-foot boat, should I take that job?' He goes, 'No.' I go, 'Why?' He goes, 'Because you don't have the training.' I go, 'Exactly,'" Captain Sandy shared. "Once you have that training and you build up to that, then you take that job, but Kiko clearly didn't have the training."

Kiko opened up about his dismissal during an interview with The Daily Dish prior to his exit in the August 3 episode of Below Deck Med and explained that although he understood why Captain Sandy let him go, he also noted that “nobody’s perfect.” “

Everybody messes up once or twice. I don’t think I [got] the chance enough, because I was doing a great job before," Kiko shared. "So, because [of] one mistake, you’re done.”

The chef said he wasn't sure if he would ever work with Captain Sandy again, but he does think that she is "a great person." “I don’t have anything against her. I think she has her opinion about me, and I totally respect her as a person and as a captain,” he told The Daily Dish. “[It] just didn’t work out.”
