Heather Dubrow Reflects on a Recent Mom “Mistake” and Why She and Terry Feel Like “Newlyweds”
The RHOC cast member opens up about her four kids and husband Terry Dubrow like never before!
The times they are a-changing for Heather Dubrow’s family.
The Real Housewives of Orange County cast member’s kids are growing up right before her (and our) eyes. And she’s opening up about what it’s been like to watch them reach some recent milestones, from her twins heading off to college last year to her daughter Kat starting a summer program in Chicago last week.
What has Heather Dubrow learned from her kids?
Heather has always been an open book when it comes to her four kids. That includes the experience of raising “four very different children of different genders and sexualities.”
She spoke about that experience in a recent interview with The Wrap, sharing, “As a mom of four very different children of different genders and sexualities, those are the challenges. I worry about their safety and their happiness. And their integration into society and raising functioning, happy, healthy humans.”
She added, however, “The rewards are just endless. We started late; I never knew we’d have so many children, even though I always wanted a big family. I am most proud of the relationship I have with my kids and the open lines of communication. [As much as] I would love to tell you how much I’ve taught them and what a wonderful mother I am, the truth is it’s me that’s learned so much. I’ve gotten such an education from these kids. They’ve opened my eyes to so many incredible moments and experiences that I’m the lucky one.”
Heather also recently appeared in the latest installment in the Amplify Our Voices series, which took place during Pride Month. You can check out the discussion below.
Heather Dubrow reflects on sending her twins to college
On the current Season 17 of RHOC, fans are getting an inside look as Heather sends her twins, Max and Nicky, off to college. It proved to be an emotional moment for Heather and her husband, Dr. Terry Dubrow. (Read more about that here.)
When speaking to The Wrap, she shared more details about what it was like to send them off to college and the “mistake” she made in the process.
“I definitely overpacked for them. You saw what was in our garage — it was crazy. How are you gonna fit that into like a jail cell–sized dorm room, but we did. One of the best things that I got them was water pitcher purifiers. That was a really good thing. Because what are they going to do? Have 12 cases of water under the bed. Plus the environment. I wanted them to have good water. So we got them those Brita pitchers,” she said. “But I’ll tell you the biggest mistake I made. I’m really into back-stock. For my shampoo, I make sure there are three: one in the shower and two back-stock so you’re never without. So I bought the kids back-stock, but they forgot it was under the bed. I sent them with way, way too much stuff and way too many clothes.”
Why Heather and Terry Feel Like “Newlyweds Again” and What’s Next for the Couple
Heather added that as her kids move out and go to college, she “definitely” feels like she “can do more” not only in her career (as she explains in the clip above) but also in her marriage — and that includes an interesting project with Terry as the couple expand their real estate portfolio.
“That apartment [in L.A.] was supposed to be for me and Terry for someday when [the kids] go. But we found the perfect spot and so we grabbed it. I think that’s probably the direction we’re going in. But you know, what’s cool is when we sold the house, we’re like newlyweds again. Where are we going? What are we doing? The possibilities are endless,” she said when speaking to The Wrap. “So we’re really exploring all possibilities. And plus, I love design. I’m not really looking to build ground-up right now. But I am looking for a new reno project, and so I’ve been looking in Orange County and Beverly Hills. Like we were talking about the universe, we’re gonna see what opens up.”
Heather shared a similar sentiment with BravoTV.com during BravoCon 2022, revealing that she felt as if she and her hubby were prepping for a “second moment” as their kids are getting older and moving into adulthood.
“I’m in a very transitional stage in my family’s life, with two kids off to college and the third not that far behind — and then the fourth not that far behind that,” she said at the time. “You know, Terry and I have been having lots of conversations about what’s happening next with us.”
She added: “What I would say is, just like when you first get married and you’re having those conversations about where you’re gonna go, what you’re gonna do with your lives, we’re kind of having, like, a second moment of that. Like, ‘Oh my god, they’re almost gone. What are we gonna do? Where are we gonna go?’ And so we got this apartment as kind of our little pied-à-terre in [Beverly Hills] to see where we’re going next.”
In a recent Instagram post, Heather shared a sweet family photo and a tribute to her longtime love, writing, “Simply the best. What would we do without you [Terry]. Love you beyond.”
