Donald Trump Serves Candlelit Fast Food Feast on Silver Platters at the White House

"Paid for by me," Trump announced over Wendy's, McDonald's, and Burger King.

Though Donald Trump was on a mission to cut out fast food — or at least to have his burgers with only half the bun — POTUS just ordered enough food from Wendy's, McDonald's, Burger King, and Domino's to feed a college football team. Literally.

With the government shutdown in full effect, the White House kitchen staff is furloughed. That means that when a national championship team swung by the white house to have a celebratory dinner with the president, they got a feast that didn't exactly look like your traditional State Dining Room dinner. Hey, at least the silver trays were in place?

Ahead of Clemson University football team's January 14 visit to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the president announced to press: "Because of the shutdown, you know we have the great Clemson team with us, the national champions. So we went out and we ordered American fast food, paid for by me. Lots of hamburgers, lots of pizza. … We have some very large people that like eating. So I think we’re going to have a little fun."

Did you catch the part about who picked up the tab for this smorgasbord? Just in case you missed it, deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley issued the following statement to CNN: "Because the Democrats refuse to negotiate on border security, much of the residence staff at the White House is furloughed — so the President is personally paying for the event to be catered with some of everyone's favorite fast foods."

Later, Trump stood before silver platters piled high with takeout containers, set on a table that was decked with a golden candelabra. He announced: "If it's American [food], I like it. It's all American stuff ... 300 hamburgers, many, many french fries — all of our favorite foods."
