As a successful board-certified anesthesiologist, award-winning teacher and lecturer in Miami, Dr. Nicole Martin’s triumph over adversity, determination and hard work form the foundation for her professional and personal success.
Nicole is a Miami native whose medical career began and continues at the University of Miami and Miller School of Medicine, where she quickly rose from student, to intern, to Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology. As the first physician in her family, Nicole’s interest in the medical field was originally inspired by her high school anatomy and physiology teacher. While in medical school, through a rotation of sub-specialties, Nicole found herself enamored by anesthesiology. She loved the diversity of patient care and the variety of surgical procedures offered by the specialty. She loved how the day-to-day was always changing and never boring — one day she could be taking care of an infant and the next a senior citizen.
As a child, Nicole attended private schools and had a fortunate upbringing. That changed radically when in her early teens, legal troubles turned her family’s life upside down. Her mother, who was previously a stay-at-home mom dedicated to her children, found herself searching for a job to support two kids and a household for the first time in 20 years. This humbling experience drastically affected the lives of everyone involved, but Nicole’s mother handled these major struggles with nothing but grace and a huge smile. It was at this formidable young age that Nicole became determined to stand on her own two feet. The family’s struggles drove Nicole to study hard, pursue her own career and ultimately create her own path toward personal and professional success. To this day, Nicole’s mother is her hero, and her admiration of her mother’s kindness, strength and parenting has significantly inspired her in her own experience as a mother.
In 2005, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Miami with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University’s Miller School of Medicine in 2009 and interned at Jackson Memorial Health System. After a two-year residency, she became Chief Resident, advancing to a fellowship in Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine. As a fellowship-trained anesthesiologist, Nicole specializes in peripheral nerve blocks that employ selective anesthesia to reduce intra-operative and post-surgical pain.
Today, Nicole is an Attending Physician at the Lennar Foundation Medical Center. She is involved in patient care and the teaching of medical students and resident physicians in the field of anesthesiology. The University of Miami is very dear to her heart as she feels fortunate to have been able to learn, grow and work in the same place where she took her first biology class nearly two decades ago. In addition to being certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, Nicole’s certifications also include Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support by the American Heart Association. She is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists, and is also a recognized teacher and lecturer. She has also co-written several book chapters and numerous scientific articles.
Nicole is open to changing things up and taking a risk in sharing her story. With this new platform she has been given, she hopes to provide inspirational career and life advice to other young women. She is no longer ashamed by her past, but instead hopes to share the message that your history doesn’t define you. She believes that women are capable of doing anything that they put their hearts and minds to.
